Week 1: Discussion: Strategic Management and Leader Innovation

Week 1: Discussion: Strategic Management and Leader Innovation

Purpose

The purpose of this discussion is to explore strategic management strategies and successful leadership skills. The U.S. healthcare delivery system is complex and rapidly changing. The DNP-prepared nurse faces many challenges and opportunities to impact positive change in healthcare organizations.

Instructions

Reflect upon your readings and professional experience regarding strategic management and innovation and address the following.

1. Examine ways that a DNP-prepared nurse can be more involved in strategic management decisions.

2. Explore initiatives and/or strategies that the DNP-prepared nurse can employ to build a culture of quality and safety.

Please review the following link for complete discussion requirements:

The differing meanings of “valid inference” and “warranted inference” are closely related to the differing purposes of deductive and inductive arguments – the purpose of deductive being to prove; the purpose of inductive to make the conclusion most probable.

The differing meanings of “valid inference” and “warranted inference” are closely related to the differing purposes of deductive and inductive arguments – the purpose of deductive being to prove; the purpose of inductive to make the conclusion most probable.

oLook up the words “valid” and “warranted.” Each of these words, you will find, has what is known as a lexical definition – that is just the dictionary definition of the word. Words also have a certain connotations – meanings that go beyond their lexical definitions; associated ideas and concepts – think of terms such a “fur baby” as the name for a pet.

oBriefly discuss how the lexical definitions and connotations of “valid” and “warranted” can help us understand the differing purposes of deductive and inductive arguments.

· Fallacies: In Section 8.2, the text states that there are “fallacious argument templates” (Facione & Gittens, p. 167) and then gives a number of examples. The authors further state: “Analysis of the meanings of the terms used and the grammatical rules of the language reveal the source of error” (p.167).

oChoose one of the fallacies in this section, such as Denying the Antecedent or False Classification and pair it with the valid argument template. For example, if you choose Denying the Antecedent, the valid argument template will be Denying the Consequent. False Classification would pair with one of the fallacies in Reasoning About Classes of Objects.

oExplain, in your own words, how the fallacy is revealed through analysis of the valid argument template. Think of it this way – if you know how the heart works, you will know that certain malfunctions will prevent it from working.  For example, if you know that the coronary arteries supply the heart with blood, then you can reason that a blockage will stop that vital flow. So this journal prompt asks you to explain, in your own words, how one of the valid argument templates work – and how that exposes the fallacy connected with that type of argument.

· Civic Responsibility: At the end of Chapter 9 there is a Bonus Exercise that asks you to research and analyze the 2009 debate over the healthcare public option. If you were actually to complete that exercise, it would take quite a bit of time and effort.

oDo you think that completing such an exercise would be time well spent or time wasted? If well-spent, why? If time wasted, why?

Assessment Description

The purpose of this assignment is to prove that the research support for the proposed solution is sufficient, compelling, relevant and from peer-reviewed professional journal articles. You will gather a minimum of 12 current, peer-reviewed journal articles based on your topic. They must be newer than 5 years old. Complete the attached summary template for each article. Using a summary table allows you to be more concise in your narrative description. Only research studies used to support your intervention should be summarized in this table.

Examine ways that a DNP-prepared nurse can be more involved in strategic management decisions.

Soza,

  1. Examine ways that a DNP-prepared nurse can be more involved in strategic management decisions.

The nursing profession has transformed and expanded from the bedside to several levels of involvement within society. Nurses are expected to continue their education and obtain a terminal degree. With the evolution of nursing and the development of our careers, health gaps have been reduced significantly. Doctorally prepared nurses are the light at the end of the tunnel for patients socially determined to have lower-quality or limited access to healthcare. DNP nurses need to assume leadership roles to be more involved in strategic management decisions regardless of their official title. Nurses need to lead the way in healthcare. We understand the needs of our patients; we spend hours listening, assessing, and intervening to improve their health outcomes. Mentoring new nurses is another way to become a respected leader. While Leadership and mentoring are great ways to become an active member in strategic management, being politically active is also essential. Health policy is where the most vital decisions are made (IOM, 2011). If nurses take part in that process, the result will be a revamped health system.

  1. Explore initiatives and strategies that the DNP-prepared nurse can employ to build a culture of quality and safety.

The National Credentialing Center (NCC) has created a certification for quality and safety to recognized nurses who are experts in this field. This initiative encourages experienced nurses to become mentors with a certificate to show their knowledge and value. Several organizations have bonuses and competencies ladder to incentive nurses to become certified. Practicing evidence-based work rather than on sacred cows is the way to build a culture of quality and safety (Barnsteiner, J,2011).

G.K. is a family nurse practitioner in the health department of a large city. She is responsible for following up with infants and children who have been referred to the health department. Most of her referrals come from the hospital upon discharge of an infant going home to a potentially high-risk environment.

G.K. follows up with each child to ensure he or she is in a safe environment and is growing and developing adequately. She provides education and support to the parents so they can anticipate and respond appropriately to the challenges of raising children.

Define and describe the following influences that can affect individual’s potential for growth:
• genetic factors
• prenatal and postnatal exposures
• nutritional factors
• environmental factors
• life style
• health care practices.

Answer the specific question above. Then, continue to discuss the 2 topics listed below for your case:

  1. Describe the relationship between culture and growth and development. Assess whether all growth and development milestones should be applied to all children regardless of cultural background.
  2. Design a teaching plan for parents regarding injury prevention during infancy. In your teaching plan you must include the home of an infant injury proof.

Post should be at least 500 words, formatted and cited in current APA style with support from at least 2 academic sources.

· Analyze the problem using Milio’s framework for prevention from the module 1 readings (Chapter three in your text, pp 41).

· Choose one of your nursing diagnoses and describe how your identified community health problem applies.

· Describe the health people 2030 national goal that relates closest to your chosen Diagnosis.

· Develop one-long term goal, minimum of three short-term goals and interventions for your chosen diagnosis (you will be developing a teaching plan in week 3).

Goals: A goal is a final outcome of what is achieved after you provide the interventions. Goals are broad in nature. Consider the long-term goal to be after one year and short-term goal after six months. These are community goals and will take longer to obtain. Consider a reduction of statistics as a long-term goal as guided by the 2030 Healthy People site. Be specific and measurable to include timeframes. (See the examples on page 89)
